Oonoonba State School benefits from the support we receive from our school community to enable the provision of a quality education for all students.
Parade
Parade is
held every Monday morning (except on Public Holidays or Student Free days) for
Prep to Year 6. Parade is led by our school leaders and usually our band performs the National Anthem and other
items. At parade, important messages are
given and nominated students receive certificates for the good work completed
in the previous week. Sport
representatives also report on the results of Interschool sport
competition. Parents are welcome and
encouraged to attend.
Defence School Mentor
We are fortunate at Oonoonba State School to have a Defence School Mentor (DSM).
The Defence School Mentor Program provides support to children of Australian Defence Force (ADF) Members and their families, particularly during their transition into and out of a school on posting. The program aims to assist the smooth transition of mobile Australian Defence Force children from school to school and across the Sates and Territories.
Why do we have a Defence School Mentor in our school?
The DSM assists children and parents to quickly become part of the school community. They answer basic questions about the school and provide a link from families to the school. They also help build the school’s long-term capacity to support mobile children and their families.
Children respond differently to relocation and change. Some make a positive transition into the new school. Others may experience difficulties. These difficulties may present in changes in behaviour, loss of self-esteem and diminished academic performance.
What does our DSM do?
A Defence School Mentor is a member of the school team. The duties of the DSM may include the following:
- Being a contact for new parents of mobile ADF children in the school
- Assisting the school and parents with enrolment procedures
- Introducing ADF parents and children to the school and its facilities
- Coordinating appropriate welcoming, deployment and farewell activities for ADF children
- Monitoring day to day children’s personal issues such as friendship
- Acting as a referral point for cases requiring specialised educational advice
- Supporting individual children’s needs as required
- Contributing to the school newsletter items of interest to mobile families
- Providing opportunities for ADF families to meet other ADF families
It is not intended that the Defence School Mentor works with an individual child on a long-term basis.
Playgroup
Oonoonba State School, in conjunction with Playgroup Qld, operates a playgroup for children 0 – 5 years. An adult must accompany children during playgroup and commit to interact with their child and leader. Playgroup operates in the Multi-purpose Hall on Fridays during school term from 9am – 10.30am. Registration can be organised at the venue at this time.
Mount Stuart Cluster of Schools
William Ross State High School, Annandale, Stuart, Wulguru, Oonoonba, and Woodstock Primary Schools work together to ensure a smooth transition for students from primary to secondary school.
Year 6 teachers and Year 7 teachers collaborate about students' work to ensure a smooth transition to high school. A joint writing project is embedded across year 6 and year 7. Extra curricular programs are offered to students in Science, Technology, English and Mathematics (STEM).
Fantastic 4 Schools
Oonoonba SS works closely with Bohlevale SS, Heatley SS and Mundingburra SS. Teachers collaborate for professional development and moderation of student work. Each school hosts year level teachers each term.
