At Oonoonba State School, it is our priority to develop, maintain and effectively implement high quality curriculum programs for our students. At Oonoonba State School all students are challenged and encouraged to reach their academic potential at a rate suited to their ability. The school is committed to developing teacher practices through professional development focusing on aspects of curriculum implementation, pedagogy and assessment and the incorporation of a proactive approach to planning and teaching.

We are currently implementing
The 8 Australian Curriculum learning areas across Prep-Year 6: English, Mathematics, Science, Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS), Technologies – Design and Digital, The Arts – Music, Media and Visual Arts, Health and Physical Education (HPE) and a Chinese Languages program (LOTE) for Years 5 and 6. The Arts - Drama and Dance will be implemented in 2020.
The Australian Curriculum is designed to develop successful learners, confident and creative individuals, and active and informed citizens. It is presented as a progression of learning from Foundation - Year 10 that makes clear to teachers, parents, students and others in the wider community what is to be taught, and the quality of learning expected of young people as they progress through school. Achievement standards for each learning area or subject describe a broad sequence of expected learning of students at each year level or band of years.
Disciplinary knowledge is found in the eight learning areas of the Australian Curriculum: English, Mathematics, Science, Health and Physical Education, Humanities and Social Sciences, The Arts, Technologies and Languages.
Alongside disciplinary knowledge, the Australian Curriculum provides seven general capabilities that are developed and applied, where relevant, through the learning areas: Literacy; Numeracy; Information and Communication Technology Capability; Critical and Creative Thinking; Personal and Social Capability; Ethical Understanding; and Intercultural Understanding. The general capabilities comprise an integrated and interconnected set of knowledge and skills that equip students to be lifelong learners and be able to operate with confidence in a complex, information-rich, globalised world.
The Australian Curriculum also includes three current cross-curriculum priorities that are to be developed and applied, where relevant, through the learning areas. These are: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures; Asia and Australia’s Engagement with Asia; and Sustainability.
